The current Hurricane Flag Football League of Houston (HFFLH) started in 2010.  However, it all began back in 1998 with a small group of people who would spontaneously get together via phone calls and play at various fields inside loop 610 on Saturdays.  The small group would divide into 2 teams and play flag football for 2 to 3 hours.  These casual pickup games continued off and on for several years until 2010.   

As this small group expanded and interest increased, Houston decided in 2010 and volunteered to host the Gay Bowl in 2011.  The Gay Bowl is our Super Bowl where all cities across the United States and Canada send their best teams to compete.  It took several volunteers, board members, sponsors and fans to plan, coordinate and host the Gay Bowl 2011 in Houston.  It took over year to plan and raise the necessary funds so Houston could host the Gay Bowl.   The Gay Bowl was played in October 2011 with the help of countless hours of the volunteers and board members. 

Subsequent to hosting the Gay Bowl, it was decided that it was time for Houston to establish a flag football league.  The first league was decided to began in the winter/spring of 2012 with 5 teams.  The five coaches drafted their teams behind closed doors and after the draft the players and teams were announced at Guava Lamp.  The first games were held on February 25, 2012 at a local middle school football field.  All five teams competed in a 4 week double header season.  Subsequent to the 4 week season all 5 teams played in a single elimination playoff tournament at the end of the season which was played in April 2012.

The Hurricanes League finished its 4th season in January 2015 with over 90 players, 6 teams, coaches, a team of referees and their fans.  HFFLH is open to LGBTS (Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender & Straight).  HFFLH will continue to support local charities by volunteering time or donating money.
